Dwayne Johnson is out for blood in Faster (2010)
Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock does not pull back any punches in Faster, a dark thriller about a man out for blood.
The film, written by Tony and Joe Gayton, and directed by George Tillman, Jr., centres on Johnson’s character simply referred to as ‘Driver’. Other key characters include Cop (Billy Bob Thornton), Detective Cicero (Carla Gugino) and Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
The film begins with Driver being released from prison after serving ten years for armed robbery and begins his quest for vengeance. The reasons for the burning hatred become apparent soon into the film.
After the successful bank robbery, Driver and his crew are ambushed and their loot stolen. Their ambushers kill everyone and slit his big brother’s throat (and he vows to kill them all) before shooting him in the back of the head. However, he does not die and executes his fury a decade later. The story is set in and around Bakersville.
The characters are all addicted to something and are struggling to break free. Driver is constantly feeding his hatred by taking a ‘sniff’ of his brother’s photograph. However, we see that he breaks free from this mental prison when he spares the blabbering evangelist’s life. The evangelist was also a former criminal and part of the crew that ambushed him.
Cop is addicted to heroin which has marred his relationship with his wife and son, and Killer is so hooked on succeeding that he cannot be content with what he has accomplished.
Johnson’s towering stature is put to good use making him seem immune to death especially when he first crosses the road to kill his first victim.
It was almost like a Frankenstein zombie crossing the road with the scars on his head and face. Kudos should be given to the makeup artists for their work.
The dark and ominous lighting and color works wonders with the mood. Even his new ride suggests something sinister.
This film thrills right to the end when the mastermind behind the ambush is revealed.
