Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné go on a College Road Trip (2008)
College is probably one of the most exciting times for a student, especially leaving your nest and going away from the folks. However, for the parents, it could be the most feared time of their lives.
That is exactly how Martin Lawrence felt in Roger Kumble’s 2008 family comedy College Road Trip.
Written by Carrie Evans, Emi Michizuki, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, and released by Walt Disney Pictures, the film is about an over achieving high school student, Melanie Porter (Raven-Symoné), who is forced on a road trip to find ‘the perfect’ college with her over protective father, James (Martin Lawrence).
This film reminds me a lot of “Are We There Yet?” especially the road trip scenario. It seems that American cinema has found the ultimate soul searching tool is the open highway.
Lawrence too, seems to be getting a little too comfortable on the road with his high speed chases in Bad Boys II, and his bikie wannabe act in Wild Hogs and now his driving his daughter in a state trooper vehicle across the state to investigate her college options.
Most of the laughs originated from the supporting cast, especially those that you find the main characters interacting with. I found the college North Western scene extremely funny and cleverly plotted.
This film has all the classic Disney trademarks; the comedy, the kids, the animals, the singing, and even the music. Even the plot is simple – a bit too simple for an adult. However, being a family oriented film that should be expected.
Overall, the film makes great family entertainment.
