Back to the Future with Van Wilder: Freshman Year
The title sounds a little odd but I have a perfectly good reason for that and you will find out soon. But before that, let me introduce you to Van Wilder: Freshman Year, the prequel to the wildly popular Van Wilder: Party Liaison which starred Ryan Reynolds (Definately, Maybe, The Proposal), Tara Reid (American Pie) and Karl Penn (Kumar from Harold & Kumar) about the extremely outgoing and popular student in Coolidge College who took seven (7) years to graduate.
In the 2009 prequel we get to meet Van (Jonathan Bennet), fresh out of high school and fresh into college. However, when he arrives he finds out that the college is not the fun loving school his father attended. Instead, it has been overrun by the dean into a military-like institution.
Dean Reardon (Kurt Fuller) also dislikes Van’s father and tries to make life miserable. Fortunately, Van always has a way of turning things around.
Now, the original Van Wilder setting was in 2002 which makes this one around 1995. However, there are gadgets used that were only available later. The most obvious is the iPhone which was only released in 2007 but that shouldn’t upset you, the jokes and gags are still the same and we also get to meet our favorite pooch for the first time.
There is a scene where we meet Colossal, the dog with extra sized testicles, for the first time – in front of an animal experiment lab which kind of explains the member though I find it contradicts Party Liaison when Van and his team decided to give him a little TLC so they could harvest his juices.
So which is it? The experiments or the lack of TLC?
Although some jokes may seem old, this film definitely brings some laughs.
If you are thinking of watching this, and haven the first and second of the series, I strongly suggest you watch them first (Party Liaison and The Rise of Taj) before indulging yourself in this one.
