Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball
It’s one bloody party in the 2010 action thriller, Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball, directed by PJ Pesce as a bunch of assassins converge to take out their target, a desk jockey FBI agent. The price on his head is $3M but there’s an expiry date to the bounty making for an explosive finale.
Tom Berenger is Walter Weed, a crippled FBI analyst who finds out that a bounty has been put on his head. He is assigned a team of agents to protect him. Leading them is Special Agent Zane Baker (Clayne Crawford) who has to keep him alive until September 19th 3AM when the bounty expires. However, that may not be as easy as it seems when more than one killer is after him.
The assassins are made up of a colorful bunch including a femme fatale who likes to kill by poison, a brutal torturer known as ‘The Surgeon’, a family of crazy rednecks and a master of disguise who steals people’s faces.
As a prequel to 2007’s Smokin’ Aces, you will find are few of the assassins from the first film like Lazlo Soot whose character is reprised by Tommy Flanagan and the Tremor family. All the characters seem to be closely related – an obscured reflection of the first. Weed (Berenger) is crippled and does magic tricks with cards, a trade shared by his counterpart Buddy “Aces” Israel.
The femme fatale, Ariella Martinez (Martha Higareda) uses her charm to poison victims and we find the same sex appeal from assassins, Sykes and Watters.
Unlike the first one, this film went direct to DVD and employs a number of relatively unknowns but with enough star power from Berenger and Jones.
