Denzel Washington stays high as a kite in Flight
Flight is a gripping drama that spends most of its time on land rather than in the air.
The story-line revolves around Captain William “Whip” Whitaker, a commercial airline pilot, who manages to miraculously crash land a plane with only four causalities and is hailed as a hero. However, as investigations proceed into the crash, something more sinister is revealed.
The film is directed and co-produced by Robert Zemeckis whose exploits include the Back to the Future series, Forest Gump and Cast Away, and stars an ensemble cast including academy award nominees Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle and Melissa Leo.
Washington’s performance as Captain Whitaker is captivating. He sets on the path of a man caught in a bottle and unable to accept his own faults, and thanks to the directorial leadership of Zemeckis, he draws the audience with his likable wit and humor – yet deplorable habits.
His deplorable vice is being an alcoholic and drug user who, while maintaining his high flying job, is unable to maintain relationships due to his problem. This is clearly depicted in his divorce and his relationships with his son, friends and girlfriend Nicole; who is a former alcoholic and drug user and a regular at AA meetings.
he directorial style brings the audience closer to the main protagonist and support characters especially with its topic – alcoholism and drug abuse.
[Spoiler alert] The film climaxes with our protagonist admitting his vices and accepting the consequences of his actions. He then uses his life’s story to educate and help those in need.
The film is a gripping drama and will undoubtedly be added to the already impressive resume for Washington and director Zemeckis.
Unfortunately Flight missed out on the awards. However, Washington proves that he is without a doubt one of the best actors in Hollywood.
