Dwayne Johnson is a Snitch (2013)
Dwayne Johnson (also known as The Rock) is one of the few pro wrestlers who have managed to break into the Hollywood industry and solidified a career in acting.
Snitch is a 2013 drama directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Justin Haythe. The film is inspired by a documentary on how federal drug policies encouraged those who were involved in the drug trade and caught to snitch on their accomplices.
Johnson plays a construction company owner, John Matthews, whose estranged son is implicated and charged with the intent to distribute narcotics. Although not a dealer, his son could face up to ten years in a federal prison.
In a desperate attempt to help his son, he cut a deal with the US Attorney Joanne Keeghan (heartlessly played by Susan Sarandon) and offers to snitch on behalf of his son.
He soon finds his way to a local small-time drug dealer named Malik. However, the local dealer’s plan to expand soon gets him (John) in touch with the inner circles of the Cartel – and things become very dangerous.
The message in this film is clear enough as we witness a desperate father trying to save his son from a system that is flawed. On the other end is Sarandon’s character whose uses this policy to drive her campaign for Congress and milking those caught in the trap.
Johnson’s attempt at a serious role is commendable. The only other like role was in Faster which did not have much dialogue. However, he is not the only actor to display superb performance.
Jon Bernthal does an amazing job as Daniel James, a former convict working for John, who tries to straighten his life. As a father of a young boy, he fears that his son will follow in his former steps and tries his best to make sure that does not happen.
Snitch is an entertaining drama depicting the lengths fathers will go to protect their children while pointing out the flaws and failures in certain policies in the United States (US).
