Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson get their hands dirty in Pain & Gain (2013)
There is motto in exercise regimes that suggest “no pain, no gain” which implies greater results for harder work. In the 2013 crime comedy, Pain & Gain, tough guys Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Anthony Mackie get their hands dirty and relate how sometimes the gain comes before the pain.
The film is directed by action director Michael Bay and adapted for the big screen from actual events and based on the book by Pete Collins, “Pain & Gain: This is a true story” which details how several bodybuilders associated with the Sun Gym kidnapped, tortured and murdered several victims.
So the plot is simple, three bodybuilders Daniel Lugo (Wahlberg), Paul Doyle (Johnson) and Adrian Doorbal (Mackie) kidnap and torture wealthy new gym member Victor Krenshaw (Tony Shaloub from Monk) into signing over his money and property to the trio. Unfortunately, they fail to kill him which comes back to bite them in the arse.
The film is thought provoking and takes us into the mentality of the criminals with thoughts from each character being narrated even Krenshaw who although having a frail physique is tough as nails
Lugo is constantly thinking of getting something better out of life and imagines a perfect life in the suburbs. Doorbal is all about physique and enhances this with steroids which render him impotent. Then there’s ex con Doyle who has been sober and a big fan of Jesus Christ; which plays big on his conscience.
The film has a kind of sweet and sour taste to it. The visual is sometimes graphic and the story is a bit confusing especially with narrations from several different characters. However, there is quite a bit of humor in the film and the mystery of what would happen next also keeps us on the edge.
