Gangnam Blues [Gangnam 1970]
Gangnam Blues aka Gangnam 1970 is a Korean gangster action film set in the backdrop of political turmoil in Seoul’s Gangnam district – a prime area for development – decades before the name became synonymous with Psy’s famous dance routine.
The film revolves around childhood friends Jong-dae and Yong-ki who struggle to get by daily. However, that soon changes when their home is demolished and they are recruited to be involved in a political skirmish and get separated.
Three years later the pair meet again, both leading different lives yet drawn inexplicably to Gangnam.
This film should resonate deep with Papua New Guineans (PNG) was we experience land grabbing in the name of development. It also indicates how social and economic factors determine value and price of land. However, those in control of these factors are the ones benefiting from it.
I could get into it further but I figure it should be something the audience can discover for themselves.
Watch with an analytical eye and compare it to the current situation in the country. I’m sure you will find a lot of similarities.
