Jake Gyllenhaal is Disturbingly Brilliant in Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler made my skin crawl at the often insensitive business of getting news footage, and Jake Gyllenhaal brilliantly brings to life an inhumane, almost robotic character whose focus on growing his empire has killed off whatever humanity he had. The film also brings to light the fact that the news is getting darker.
The more captivating news nowadays is filled with human misery and suffering, and we don’t have to look far for examples. We get our dose from the local dailies on a regular basis, but it’s even more disturbing to know that the press is only giving what readers crave.
The desire for graphic news (and price) drives Gyllenhaal’s character to delve on the criminal by withholding information from police and orchestrating the murder of his partner. He even goes to length to literally kill the competition. Unfortunately, it does not stop there.
As we progress further, Rene Russo’s character becomes influenced and changed by Gyllenhaal’s character. This could be a statement regarding the influence and sway the media has on the public.
I can recall back how shocked the nation was when the first graphic pictures of criminals shot dead were published in the local dailies some years back. Today, it has seemed to become a norm, questioning the very ethics of journalism in the country.
Anyway, Nightcrawler is disturbing and will definitely make you think twice the next time you watch any graphic footage on the 6pm news.
