MJW showcases Kyokyushin roots in Never Back Down: No Surrender
Michael Jai White (MJW) revives his role as Case Walker; the recluse Sensei who happens to be a former undefeated MMA champion, who decides to train a couple of students. However, this time he becomes the main character – a showcases some traditional karate.
White has always been a traditionalist and he has always showcased his traditional roots by doing the kata. In the film, Blood & Bone he does Tensho, in Never Back Down 2 he does a little Tekki Shodan and in this latest, he does the same although I’m not sure which kata he practices.
There is also a valuable lesson in the use gloves and how to punch. Although, the focus is on MMA style fighting, it brings valuable wisdom of karate and insight into how traditional and MMA may not so different after all.
Anyway, this time Case Walker goes to Thailand as a trainer and somehow ends up signing a million dollar contract to fight. Ironically, his students steer him back to his principles. I mean, hey, a million dollars is a lot of money.
Now, I won’t divulge more so as not to ruin your watching experience, but it was a wonderful experience to watch traditional training methods being interpreted in a modern way.
